Doing
I like the metaphor that our actions are like the visible bit of an iceberg. What we do is driven by often difficult to see relationally emmeshed beliefs wrapped up with need-infused, embodied feelings. Therapy involves diving into these deep waters and exploring the experiences that shape our patterns of thinking and feeling and the actions that emerge from these vital factors. It also invites us to take values-based action. And sometimes this process can involve some quite 'exciting white water rafting' however much exploration of the underlying depths we've done.
Be aware and do meaningful stuff
I love these wise words by Russ Harris in The Happiness Trap (Chapter 28: Finding fulfilment): ‘Yes, we set goals, because goals are essential to a fulfilling, rewarding life — but we set them guided by our values. This means the goals we pursue are a lot more personally meaningful. And life itself becomes much more rewarding. We live more in the present and we appreciate what we have. So, even as we move toward our goals, we find a deep satisfaction in life as it is right now.’
Therapeutic Exploration and Strengths coaching may help you to take more values-based actions in your life. Various Awareness-building practices could also support this. Need some help riding the waves? Maybe some Balancing moments are called for. Want to make therapy more physical and embodied? Maybe you'll benefit from doing some creative methods.
